Castiglione Chiavarese

Province: Genoa · Region: Liguria · Population: 1,642 · Postal code: 16030

The border between the Ligurians and the Etruscans probably ran through here. In Roman times the hamlet of Velva was a municipium, made so by the emperor Trajan, and it stood on the via Sara, the road that from Sestri Levante crossed the Apennines towards the Parma country.

In the oratory of San Bernardino, which was perhaps the old hospitale of Sant'Antonio, the marble measures for oil and wine are still kept. The fief belonged to the Fieschi, who sold it to Genoa in 1276; on monte Loreto an archaeological mining site remains, and the Petronio, rising on monte San Nicolao, has carved the rock the length of the valley. The population is 1,642.
