Casarza Ligure

Province: Genoa · Region: Liguria · Population: 6,708 · Postal code: 16030

The town used to stand on a hill and was called Candiasco. Then it came down to the floor of the Petronio valley, where it is today. In 774 a diploma of Charlemagne had given these lands to the monks of Bobbio; from 1143 they passed to the curia of Sestri Levante.

Among those who refounded the first settlement were the Camezzana, close relatives of the Fieschi of Lavagna, and that kinship paid: from the two Fieschi popes, Innocent IV and Adrian V, they obtained a good many benefits. A locality of the comune still carries their name. There are 6,708 residents.

Saint Monica, patroness of a town perhaps born in Roman times on a hill

📅 Every year, on the second Sunday of May

Casarza Ligure celebrates Saint Monica on the second Sunday of May; the town, which according to local history originally stood on a hill rather than in today's valley floor, was recorded in the earliest documents under the name Candiasco.
