The patroness of Vezzano Ligure is the Madonna del Molinello, celebrated on 3 June in the sanctuary-parish church of Santa Maria del Molinello, in the hamlet of Prati di Vezzano. The building of the sanctuary, in the 16th century, followed the Marian apparition of 1523 to the villager Caterina del Rosso, said by tradition to have occurred during a plague that struck the area.
Vezzano is documented as early as 19 May 963, when Emperor Otto I of Saxony assigned the fief of the castle, with its fortifications and court, to Adalbert, count-bishop of Luni. The first settlement arose at Vezzano Superiore around the 10th century, around the stronghold of the castle and tower; in the 12th century, at Vezzano Inferiore, a pentagonal tower was also built, linked to the castle by a bridge, whose remains are still visible today.
