Bergeggi

Province: Savona · Region: Liguria · Population: 1,126 · Postal code: 17028

The name comes from the Germanic Berg, rock: and the rock is the island just offshore, a mountain coming out of the water. The bishops of Savona had a monastery built on it in 992, but between the fourth and the sixth centuries it was already a refuge of the earliest monks.

The twentieth century left two memorial stones. On 4 May 1917, two miles off the coast, a German submarine sank the British steamer Transylvania: on the rocks stands the monument to the 414 dead. On the night of 25 October 1921 the disaster of the fort on monte Sant'Elena cost the village lives, houses and heavy damage to the parish church. The population is 1,126.
