Spotorno

Province: Savona · Region: Liguria · Population: 3,886 · Postal code: 17028

In 1385 pope Urban VI sold Spotorno to the Republic of Genoa. Pietra Ligure was in the same package, and the price for the two was 60,000 florins: a seaside fief changing hands like any other property.

The name comes from spelt: Spelturnum in the documents of the twelfth century, from the Latin spelta with a suffix that marks where a given plant grows, the place where spelt is grown. Before the pope the town had belonged to the Del Carretto and then to the bishop of Savona, who by 1180 already held its castle; and Noli, Segno and Genoa once allied to attack it. There are 3,886 residents.
