Cosseria

Province: Savona · Region: Liguria · Population: 1,080 · Postal code: 17017

The name comes from Crux ferrea, the iron cross that stood on Montecala, on the boundary between the dioceses of Alba and Mondovì; the first mention is from 967, in a diploma of Otto I.

But what is remembered here is 13 April 1796: among the ruins of the castle a handful of Sardinian grenadiers and Croatian soldiers, under Filippo Del Carretto, stood up to Napoleon's troops. Del Carretto lost his life there and passed into history for the way he fought; more than three thousand men were left dead on the field. The village's coat of arms carries that ruined tower. The population is 1,080.

📅 Every year, on 24 August

Cosseria celebrates Saint Bartholomew on 24 August; the town is best known for the bloody battle of 13 April 1796, when Napoleon Bonaparte defeated the Austro-Sardinian troops there despite the strenuous defence of Filippo Del Carretto, opening the way to the French occupation of mountainous Liguria.
