Carcare

Province: Savona · Region: Liguria · Population: 5,605 · Postal code: 17043

In 1276 a deed speaks of «three parts of the village and of the men of the half of Carcare». It is not a slip: the town had already been divided in two in 1185 between the two sons of Enrico Del Carretto, and one of the two halves was then shared out in three among the grandsons.

The position was worth it: the via Aemilia Scauri passed here, between Acqui Terme and Vado, and Carcare was the mansio of Calanicum. In the documents of 998 and 999, when Otto III handed the tithes to the bishop of Savona, the place was called Bugile; the name Carcaris appears in a donation to the abbey of Ferrania in 1111. There are 5,605 residents.

Saint John the Baptist, patron of a town with a crucifix by Maragliano

📅 Every year, on 24 June

Carcare celebrates Saint John the Baptist on 24 June; its 19th-century parish church holds a crucifix attributed to the celebrated Genoese sculptor Anton Maria Maragliano, in the town that was the birthplace of the Garibaldian writer Anton Giulio Barrili.
