Arcene

Province: Bergamo · Region: Lombardy · Population: 4,731 · Postal code: 24040

On the fifth of April 1864 a painting of the Madonna that hung on the wall of a house in Arcene shed tears. The village built a neo-Gothic sanctuary around it, and since then that date has stayed in the local calendar: the village band plays every year on the fifth of April, as well as on the second of June and at the opening of the Christmas season. The parish church, dedicated to Saint Michael, is older: it was built in 1781 by the architect Luca Lucchini in place of an earlier one.

The name of the village remains an open question: some derive it from the Latin arx, a citadel, some from agger, a rampart, and some from an Etruscan word. In every case it speaks of a fortification, one the old chronicles mention often and of which almost nothing has survived. The first time Arcene appears in writing is in 753, in a donation made to a monastery in Emilia: there the village is called Artinne.
