Castel Rozzone

Province: Bergamo · Region: Lombardy · Population: 2,896 · Postal code: 24040

Two explanations are given for the name of Castel Rozzone, and both stand in the same entry. The first is the family: the Rozzone, Milanese and Ghibelline, who in the thirteenth century built the fortified court here and who in 1386, losing the struggle with the Visconti, lost the territory too, leaving the village their surname and nothing else. The second is water: the irrigation channels of these fields are called roson in dialect, or rossa grande, and from there the place name would come. In the municipal arms both appear, the castle tower and the watercourse.

That fortified court was not merely a residence: it stood right against the fosso bergamasco, the border between the Republic of Venice and the Duchy of Milan, and served as a customs post as well. The church of San Bernardo Abate was authorised in 1523, built on land given by the Visconti with sand and stones brought from the Serio, and inaugurated in 1544; in 1566 Saint Charles Borromeo visited it. Then there is the church of the plague dead, born as a chapel for those who died of the pestilence in the seventeenth century, which behind its altar keeps the bones brought up from the old cemetery. Two thousand eight hundred and ninety-six inhabitants.

Saint Bernard and the 1470 oath

📅 Every year, on 20 August

Castel Rozzone celebrates Saint Bernard of Clairvaux on 20 August, in the church dedicated to him. In 1470, the Duke of Milan Galeazzo Maria Sforza received an oath of fealty from Knight Sagramoro II Visconti for the fief of Castel Rozzone.
