Luzzana

Province: Bergamo · Region: Lombardy · Population: 891 · Postal code: 24069

Luzzana has 891 inhabitants in the val Cavallina, on the right bank of the Cherio. The oldest thing in the village is an ovoid boulder with a Neolithic carving, of about two thousand years before Christ, which scholars think may be a calendar. The name, on the other hand, appears for the first time in 886, in some deeds of sale of land. Above the village stands the Giovanelli castle, of the thirteenth century, with its tower and its walls pierced by loopholes: the comune bought it in 1989 and now keeps inside it the town hall, the library and a museum of contemporary art.

The museum is called the Donazione Meli, and the Meli are from here: Giosuè, a sculptor of the nineteenth century, and Alberto, a sculptor of the twentieth. A village of not even a thousand people that produced two of them in two centuries, and keeps them all around it: works of theirs are in the parish church of San Bernardino, together with the paintings of Francesco Zucco, and at località Costa there is a sculpture cut straight into the rock, which Giosuè Meli made in 1841 and which everybody calls the Giant.
