Grumello del Monte

Province: Bergamo · Region: Lombardy · Population: 7,228 · Postal code: 24064

The name comes from the Latin grumus, a hill, through the diminutive Grumulus; del Monte came later, to keep it apart from Grumello del Piano, now a district of Bergamo. The weightiest early record of the name is the one where the Bergamasque cardinal Guglielmo Longhi, who died at Avignon in 1319, cites the village of Grumulus.

In the Middle Ages its Guelphs long fought the Ghibellines of Lake Iseo, and for that reason are said to have raised a castle and a watchtower: the Guelph tower, the walls, the guard room and the prisons survive. Bartolomeo Colleoni spent his rare free hours here in the fifteenth century. The golden lion of the town arms comes from that of the Calepio, lords here until the eighteenth century; and local tradition has it that in January 1706 Spanish soldiers threatening the village were stopped by an apparition of the Virgin of the Assumption, painted on the canvas in the church at Boldesico.
