Treviolo

Province: Bergamo · Region: Lombardy · Population: 10,302 · Postal code: 24048

Treviolo runs so close to Bergamo that on Via Fratelli Bandiera one side of the street is the town's and the other the city's. The name comes from the Celtic root TREV, meaning village: charters give Trevilio in 910 and Triviliolo in 1174, the diminutive probably distinguishing it from Treviglio. Treviolo, Albegno, Curnasco and Roncola have formed one comune only since 1927; Curnasco later tried in vain to regain its independence.

The arms hold those four stories together: anvil and hammer for Albegno, where the maer were the smiths who ran the irrigation channels; a sheaf of wheat for Curnasco, farmland of the monks; the Ghibelline-battlemented Solza castle, theirs from the fourteenth to the early nineteenth century; three blue waves for Roncola, on the Brembo. Of the castle, among Bergamo's defences by the eleventh century and later destroyed by the Colleoni of Trezzo, tower and gateway remain.
