Bariano

Province: Bergamo · Region: Lombardy · Population: 4,350 · Postal code: 24050

The rice fields arrived and the fevers came with them. From 1726 malaria became a permanent presence at Bariano, and in 1815 an epidemic struck 650 inhabitants out of 800: more than four people in five. The very water that made the Bergamo plain fertile kept the village sick, and it took generations to get out from under it. In 1867 it was cholera that caused 39 deaths; in 1602 a hailstorm had destroyed the harvest, in 1630 the plague that Manzoni would describe had passed through, and in 1613 and 1617 the Spanish armies had come by.

Four thousand three hundred and fifty inhabitants in the province of Bergamo, in the middle of the plain. For two centuries Bariano was border country and changed hands constantly: in 1407 Pandolfo Malatesta took it, in 1428 it went to Venice, in 1441 it returned to the Visconti, in 1446 to the Venetians again, and in 1453 Colleoni retook it for Milan. Only the peace of Lodi in 1454 closed the matter, fixing the boundary along the Fosso Bergamasco and assigning the village for good to the Republic of Venice. The municipal coat of arms bears three golden cats crouching side by side.
