Saint John the Baptist, patron of Madone
📅 Every year, on 24 June
Madone celebrates Saint John the Baptist on 24 June, in the church dedicated to him.
On the coat of arms of Madone there are four bricks, and it is not a fanciful image: tradition holds that the village takes its name from its old brickworks, and those bricks already appear in the Camozzi armorial of 1888. The real symbol of the place, however, is the disused kiln, with its tall chimney visible from far off — at least until the thirtieth of August 2007, when a whirlwind brought part of it down.
Three thousand nine hundred and forty-three inhabitants in the province of Bergamo, in the Isola bergamasca, on the Dordo stream. The village lost its independence for twenty years: in 1927 it was merged with Chignolo d'Isola into a commune christened Centrisola, and got it back only in 1948. The earliest document recording its name is from the tenth century and speaks of lands at Madono. Of the castle that dominated the village in the days of the Guelph and Ghibelline wars nothing remains: it was destroyed by the Colleoni of Trezzo sull'Adda in one of their raids.
