Trescore Balneario

Province: Bergamo · Region: Lombardy · Population: 9,427 · Postal code: 24069

Trescore has always been the chief town of the lower Val Cavallina and for centuries its administrative seat. A document of 996 names it Trescurium, though other papers set a place called Leuceris beside it, leaving both the name's origin and the old village's name uncertain. The arms cut it short: a large T across the quarters, the town reduced to its initial. The rest of the name comes from the thermal waters, known to the Romans for their effect and restored by Bartolomeo Colleoni.

On the square stands the Suardi tower, of the thirteenth century, raised to its old height in the eighteenth; of the church of San Cassiano, recorded by 1105, only the apse survives. The best is in no church: the chapel Lorenzo Lotto frescoed in 1524 with the stories of Saint Barbara and Saint Brigid, inside the private villa of the Suardi who ordered it. The hospital came from don Isidoro Bortolotti, who bought part of the old Capuchin convent himself.
