Suisio

Province: Bergamo · Region: Lombardy · Population: 3,873 · Postal code: 24040

On the eleventh of July 1930 a hailstorm came down on Suisio that destroyed every crop. Only the wheat was saved, because it had already been cut and was standing in stooks. The storm was so violent that the next day the boys went into the woods to gather up the dead birds. It came after two already disastrous years: in 1928 and 1929 a drought had cut the harvest to two ninths of the normal, and between 1924 and 1928 eighty-one people had left here for France, where they later took citizenship.

Three thousand eight hundred and seventy-three inhabitants in the province of Bergamo, on the left bank of the Adda, in the Isola bergamasca — a country that the Venetians, arriving in 1428, found so worn down by famine and plague that they called it the hunger triangle. The village's name appears for the first time in a document of 879, written Sevisio; then Sevixio, Sovisio, Sovixio, and finally, in a Vatican codex that between 1392 and 1395 traced the boundaries of the Bergamo communes, Communis de Suixio.
