Onore

Province: Bergamo · Region: Lombardy · Population: 846 · Postal code: 24020

Onore has 846 inhabitants between the Clusone plateau and the Val Borlezza. The name looks like a virtue and has nothing to do with one: it comes from the Latin lanorium, the wool place, which became Lanore, then Lonore, then Onore. The people here were good breeders, and with their flocks they supplied the merchants who climbed all the way up for a wool reckoned to be of excellent quality; the coat of arms says so without circumlocution, with spinning spindles above and a fir wood and a sheep below.

The village's history is a series of losses and recoveries of itself. In 1378, in the worst years of the fighting between Guelphs and Ghibellines in the Bergamo country, Onore, which was Guelph together with neighbouring Songavazzo, was put to fire and sword. With Venice came quiet, and in 1417 the village gave itself a communal statute of its own. Under Fascism it lost its administrative autonomy and was merged into Castione della Presolana; it got itself back only in 1958, by a decree of the President of the Republic. On the map of the Duchy of Milan painted in the Gallery of Maps of the Vatican Museums the village is written Honore.
