Clusone

Province: Bergamo · Region: Lombardy · Population: 8,678 · Postal code: 24023

Clusone sits on a glacial plateau in the upper Val Seriana, and historians have never agreed on its name: the leading view starts from Clausonium in medieval documents, from the Latin clausus, a place closed in by mountains. People from the old town call themselves baradèlli rather than clusonesi, and the nickname is said to come from Castel Baradello near Como, where Napoleone della Torre, lord of Bergamo and of the valley, died shut in a wooden cage.

On the town hall tower Pietro Fanzago installed in 1583 a planetary clock marking the sun, the moon and the equinoxes, wound by hand every day for four hundred years; Fanzago also repaired the clock in Venice's Piazza San Marco. On the facade of the Oratorio dei Disciplini, facing the basilica, Giacomo Borlone de Buschis painted around 1485 a Triumph of Death and a Dance of Death.
