Feast of San Bartolomeo
📅 Every year, on 24 August
On 24 August Songavazzo, a municipality of 702 inhabitants in the province of Bergamo, celebrates its patron San Bartolomeo the apostle.
The village's name is a comparative. The first document that records it, of 1294, calls it Summus Gavatio, that is upper Gavazzo, because it stood a little higher than the village of Gavazzo, older and more important, which lay in the fields below and is now reduced to a few farmsteads. The lower village has vanished; the upper one kept the name and the comparison. In the municipal arms a bull recalls the cattle farms and a mitre the feudal jurisdiction of the bishops of Bergamo, exercised after 1026. In 1378, during the wars of Guelphs and Ghibellines, the village, Guelph like neighbouring Onore, was put to fire and sword.
Over the Valeggia torrent stands a reinforced concrete bridge built in 1911 and held to be the first light reinforced concrete bridge made in Europe. On the twentieth of November 2016, meanwhile, Songavazzo voted on whether to merge with Onore, Cerete, Rovetta and Fino del Monte, with whom it had shared a union of municipalities since 2000: the ballot also asked what name the new municipality should take, offering Borghi Presolana, Borlezza or Larna. No won everywhere, and here by two hundred and twenty-one votes against two hundred and six. The name was never needed.
