Cerete appears for the first time in 883, when the emperor Charles the Fat gave the bishop of Bergamo the small monastery of San Michele Arcangelo «in locum qui dicitur Cerretum». Around that monastery a village took shape, and it grew fairly quickly: in a deed of land exchange of 941, kept in the Codex diplomaticus Langobardiae, the place is called a civitas. Around the year 1000 there was also a palace of the bishop of Bergamo here, with its own tower.

The church of Santi Filippo e Giacomo, at Cerete Alto, stands where the medieval castle used to be, and the design is by Andrea Fantoni of Rovetta: the sculptor everyone knows for altars and statues here, exceptionally, works as an architect. It was begun on 22 July 1711 and finished in 1725. Down at Cerete Basso, instead, is the oldest church, San Vincenzo, which dates from the year 1000 and was attached to the episcopal palace: since 1697 it holds the remains of Saint Vincent, a Roman martyr. And the Cula torrent, which never dries up all year round, has always turned the village mills.
