Cornate d'Adda

Province: Monza and Brianza · Region: Lombardy · Population: 10,363 · Postal code: 20872

Cornate d'Adda was simply Cornate until 1924 and is the only comune in the province of Monza and Brianza to border the province of Bergamo; it sits inside the Parco Adda Nord, with the hamlets of Colnago, Porto d'Adda and Villa Paradiso. The name is unsettled: one guess is the Latin cornus, the cornel tree, while popular belief prefers Coronate, where a Lombard queen is said to have been crowned, or the cornate of the Adda, the bends where the current strikes hardest.

Around 690 Alachis, duke of Trento and Brescia, fought here against the Lombard king Cunipert, whose throne he had tried to take; having won, Cunipert had a church built to Saint George, protector of soldiers. In the lower part of its bell tower a Roman inscription was found, the dedication of a certain Sextus or Sesticius to the Matronae, female deities of Celtic origin, and to the villagers. The title of city came in 2018; the arms show a silver castle on red, backed by two crossed swords.

Saint Aloysius, patron moved to autumn for harvest time

📅 Every year, on the second Sunday of September; Saint Aloysius's day falls on 21 June but was moved due to harvest

Cornate d'Adda celebrates its patron Saint Aloysius on the second Sunday of September, in the Church of San Giorgio Martire. As Saint Aloysius's day falls on 21 June, until the late 20th century summer was harvest time, so the feast was moved to autumn.
