Cevo

Province: Brescia · Region: Lombardy · Population: 930 · Postal code: 25040

Cevo has 930 inhabitants on top of the Androla ridge, in the Valsaviore, inside the Adamello park. It is a village that has burned twice. The first time on 22 April 1644, when lightning set fire to it and destroyed almost all of it. The second on 3 July 1944, and that time the fire was set on purpose: after the armistice not one of the young men of Cevo had turned up for the call-up of the Republic of Salò, and on the mountains above the village the fifty-fourth Garibaldi brigade had been formed.

That day about a thousand republican troops surrounded the village in a pincer movement, shielding themselves with some of the women of Cevo, and set fire to the roofs with incendiary bottles. The fire destroyed 151 houses and damaged or looted others; six people were killed, and out of about twelve hundred inhabitants eight hundred were left without a roof. In 1992 the Republic gave Cevo the bronze medal for military valour for the sacrifices of its people.
