Among the dues that the people of Sellero owed the bishop of Brescia there was one on bears: if one was killed — and in the Val Camonica of those days it was a common animal — the best parts had to be sent to the city. The rest of the obligations was set down in writing by the episcopal cadastre of 1299, ordered by Berardo Maggi: the steward Cazoino declared that the tithe of the vicinia was worth ninety pounds of cheese and thirty-eight imperial soldi, that the local men had to carry embassies free of charge from one pieve to another and to guard, together with those of Pescarzo, the castle of Cemmo; every family owed a day's work to the curia and a ram and a lamb for every ten, or, if it had only cattle, a cartload of timber.

The village's name has three possible explanations and none of them certain: from the Latin cellula, the little cell, for the monastery of Saint Desiderius; from sella, that is a mountain pass; or from the Germanic hèl, the pit, which would point to the mines that once existed in these parts. Before all of this there were the Camunni: on this territory the rock engravings are counted in thousands, the oldest from the Bronze Age, and in the locality of Carpene there is a rosa camuna arranged differently from the one that became the symbol of Lombardy. The repopulation after the Roman emptiness is documented by a charter of 927 describing houses of wood, straw and stone where the village stands today.
