On 24 June Saviore dell'Adamello, a municipality of 992 inhabitants in the province of Brescia, celebrates its patron Saint John the Baptist.
Saviore is the highest of the villages of its own valley and has one of the largest territories of the Val Camonica: within its boundaries stands the highest peak of the province of Brescia, Monte Adamello, which reaches 3539 metres. Of its ancient history, however, almost nothing remains, and for a precise reason: on 29 April 1651 a fire destroyed the village and reduced to ashes the papers of the communal archive as well. Of the time before, only a few isolated episodes are known: at the peace of Breno of 31 December 1397 the community's representative, the notary Ottobono Predorni, took the Ghibelline side; and on 17 September 1423 the bishop of Brescia invested Bertolino della Torre di Cemmo with the tithe rights over Saviore and a dozen other villages of the valley.
The archive, in fact, the people of Saviore came close to losing twice. In 1927 a royal decree united Saviore with Cevo by authority, forming the comune of Valsaviore: indignant, the inhabitants armed themselves with pitchforks and sticks, marched in procession to the town hall of Cevo, took back by force the registers and archive papers, loaded them onto carts and carried them home. The gesture served only to land some sixty people in jail, men and women, tried by summary process, who got off thanks to the intervention of the deputy Carlo Bernardi; the comune of Valsaviore was suppressed only in 1954. The nickname that in the Camunian dialects marks out the people of Saviore is Marà, and a proverb of the valley says that the marà of Saviore, when they cannot do harm to others, do it to each other. The parish church of San Giovanni Battista, finished in the first decade of the sixteen-hundreds, stands on the Dosso Merlino, where the ruins of the castle of the same name can still be seen.
