Gottolengo

Province: Brescia · Region: Lombardy · Population: 5,238 · Postal code: 25023

The name of Gottolengo is half Gothic and half Lombard: the root Gott- comes from the Goths, the suffix -engo from the Lombards, and together they are thought to mean "territory belonging to the village". It appears for the first time in the diploma addressed by Berengar II to the abbot of Leno in 958. The only rise in the whole territory, everything else being flat, is the Castellaro: there the pile dwellings of the first inhabitants were found, who then abandoned the place towards the end of the Bronze Age.

The year 1521 was for the village one of ruin and honour together. On the twenty-ninth of October the Spanish and papal troops broke into the town and plundered everything they found; to get back on its feet, Gottolengo was exempted from taxes for about five years and was granted the right to hold a market of its own. In that same year the French recognised it with three fleurs-de-lis of France, for having helped them, together with the Venetians, in the resistance against Charles V of Habsburg: those lilies are still on the coat of arms.
