Paisco Loveno

Province: Brescia · Region: Lombardy · Population: 198 · Postal code: 25050

Paisco lies at the bottom of its valley, on the side that gets no sun: in winter it goes for months without direct light. The municipality is made of three settlements — Loveno higher up, Grumello just below, Paisco down the valley — all on the northern side of the valley the Allione runs through, and with its thirty-six square kilometres for fewer than two hundred inhabitants it is the least densely populated municipality in the whole province of Brescia. At Loveno di Saviera and Traversagna there were fourteen iron mines.

In the Val Camonica every village has its scütüm, its collective nickname: the people of Loveno are the aocàcc, the lawyers, or else the rumìcc, the hermits. And there is a proverb that says everything about the reputation of these two villages: «A Paísc e Loé nó'n mangé, se nó'n porté», at Paisco and Loveno do not eat unless you bring it with you — whoever wants bread should carry it from home. The two municipalities were separate: they came together in 1928, taking both names. In 1299 the consuls of the two communities had gone down to Cemmo to swear fealty to the bishop of Brescia and pay their tithe.
