Merlino

Province: Lodi · Region: Lombardy · Population: 1,772 · Postal code: 26833

The name makes one think of the wizard, but it most probably comes from the Latin locum Merle, and the history of Merlino is that of a border village: it stands at the crossing of the provinces of Milan, Lodi and Cremona, closed to the east by the Adda and to the west by the Muzza canal, and it is one of the 61 comuni of the Parco Agricolo Sud Milano. A fief of the counts of Merlino, in 1370 the land was given by Bernabò Visconti to his wife Regina della Scala, and from 1647 to 1782 it belonged to the counts Belgioioso.

Autonomy, here, was first lost and then regained: in the Napoleonic age Merlino became a frazione of Paullo, and went back to being a comune only with the Kingdom of Lombardy-Venetia; in 1841 it was Merlino's turn to absorb the two neighbouring comuni of Marzano and Vaiano. There remain the parish church of Santi Stefano e Zenone, of ancient origin but rebuilt in 1615, and the sanctuary of San Giovanni del Calandrone. The land is flat and full of water, and it is still farmed; but the toll gate of Milan's outer eastern ring road, a few hundred metres from the boundary, is changing this too.
