Alzate Brianza

Province: Como · Region: Lombardy · Population: 5,019 · Postal code: 22040

On the coat of arms of Alzate Brianza there is a little temple with four columns, and it is not an ornament: it alludes to the temple of Minerva that must have stood where the parish church stands today. Of that cult two inscribed stones remain, and a burial ground that has yielded coins spanning three centuries. The name of the village comes instead from an Alcius or Altius, with the usual suffix -ate, and in a document of the tenth century it is written Alzae; the Brianza in the name is a Celtic word meaning height.

In the old centre rises a square medieval tower, and fragments of Roman inscriptions and sculptures have ended up inside its masonry; on its face there is a sundial. In the church of San Giorgio frescoes attributed to Marco d'Oggiono are preserved, among them a cycle of 1531 with the Adoration of the Magi, the Flight into Egypt and the Last Supper. The village has also housed a pope: villa Odescalchi, built at the start of the seventeenth century, was the residence of Innocent XI.
