Brienno

Province: Como · Region: Lombardy · Population: 402 · Postal code: 22010

The name comes from the Celtic brig, «a steep place», and the village looks like one: it stands on sloping rock, with the houses drawn upward and narrow flights of steps instead of streets. In the Statutes of Como of 1335 Brienno is the comune that must keep its stretch of the via Regina in repair. In the arms there is the sail of a comballo, the lake boat this place lived by.

In the parish church of Santi Nazaro e Celso a tooth is kept that is supposed to be Frederick Barbarossa's, wrapped in a fourteenth-century parchment. The water, meanwhile, goes on doing damage: in July 2011 a flood left marks still visible on the houses, and on the twenty-seventh of July 2021 it was worse.
