Veniano

Province: Como · Region: Lombardy · Population: 2,887 · Postal code: 22070

Veniano was for a long time two villages, Inferiore and Superiore, and the coat of arms still says so: the shield is divided in two, one part for each community. In 1644 they were two separate municipalities; from 1757 a single one, though the official name long remained Veniano Inferiore e Superiore; in 1927 the whole became a hamlet of Appiano Gentile, and only in 1950 did the municipality break away again, with the two halves at last reunited. In the upper part of the arms is a crown, recalling the grant of these lands by Liutprand, king of the Lombards, to the Pavian monastery of San Pietro in Ciel d'Oro.

The oldest church is Santa Maria del Carmine, born as a chapel on one of the roads leading into Switzerland. It was the village's first parish church until 1601, when after the visit of Saint Charles Borromeo the seat passed to Sant'Antonio; since then it has not changed shape and has stayed single-naved, just as Borromeo described it. In the restoration of 1978 the frescoes of 1312 came back to light, but part of the cycle is still under the plaster. Two thousand eight hundred and eighty-seven inhabitants in the province of Como.
