Guanzate

Province: Como · Region: Lombardy · Population: 5,705 · Postal code: 22070

Guanzate appears in the documents for the first time in 1125, and it appears there badly: its inhabitants, who sided with Milan, had killed the Como nobleman Beltramo Brocco, and Como answered by destroying the village. Less than three centuries later the threat came from the opposite side: in 1412 it was the Milanese who wanted their revenge, because a certain Luchino di Vogenzate had taken part in the plot in which Giovanni Maria Visconti was assassinated.

Of the village as it is today the strangest thing is the battlemented tower in piazza Partigiani, which has the air of a fortification and is in fact a drinking-water tank, built in the years immediately before the Great War to a design by the engineer Gaetano Suvini. The war memorial met with a singular fate: the bronze statue, a soldier offering olive and laurel as a sign of peace, was given up in 1943 as material useful to the war effort, and it had to wait until after the war to be replaced.
