Carbonate

Province: Como · Region: Lombardy · Population: 2,905 · Postal code: 22070

For a quarter of a century Carbonate was not called Carbonate. In 1928 a royal decree merged Mozzate, Carbonate and Locate Varesino into a new municipality christened Seprio, after the ancient county; after the war Locate and Mozzate went their own way and Carbonate remained the heir of the extinct body, taking its own name back on the thirtieth of May 1953. It was not the first time the village had ended up inside another identity: two attempts to move it into the province of Varese had already failed, in the eighteenth century.

Freedom, here, had been bought: in 1650 the community redeemed itself from enfeoffment by paying forty imperial lire for every head of household. How many they were is known from an older census, the Status Animarum compiled by the parson Francesco Girardi: in 1574 Carbonate counted 271 inhabitants in thirty-seven families. The name appears for the first time in a charter of 864, and comes perhaps from a personal name, Carbone, with the suffix -ate, the typical Celtic genitive widespread in Lombardy. Two thousand nine hundred and five inhabitants in the province of Como.
