Locate Varesino

Province: Como · Region: Lombardy · Population: 4,216 · Postal code: 22070

The village is in the province of Como but is called Varesino, and the reason is not geographical: the royal decree of the eighth of February 1863 that added the adjective to the old name Locate did so in memory of its ancient membership of the county of Seprio, the early medieval district centred near Castelseprio. That reference came back a second time, and more drastically: from 1928 to 1950 Locate Varesino was no longer a municipality but a hamlet of a municipality called Seprio, a name resurrected from scratch to hold neighbouring villages together.

Four thousand two hundred and sixteen inhabitants, between the conifer woods of the Pineta park of Appiano Gentile and Tradate to the north and the cultivated plain to the south. Through Locatum ran the Roman road linking Milan to Lugano by way of Varese. In 1468 Ludovico il Moro, on his way to the Sacro Monte of Varese, stopped here; around 1510, in the wars between pope Julius II and Louis XII, the village was ravaged by passing troops. The centre is still divided into quarters that carry their dialect names: Canton Sòtt, Baciòcch, La Vigana and Canton Svizzer.
