Until the early twentieth century mercury thermometers were made at Cirimido. The baruméta made them, village craftsmen, in their own workshops, and according to an account by Cesare Cantù more than fifty thousand pieces a year came out of them. The work was done above all in winter, when the fields asked for nothing and farmers were taken on as labour; in the same season silkworm rearing did well too. In 1898 the first shoe factory opened, and the emigration that had just begun came to a stop.
The municipal coat of arms, on the other hand, records a fire. In 1125, during the war between Como and Milan, some men of Guanzate who had killed the Como commander Beltramo Brocco in an ambush took refuge in the church of Cirimido; the soldiers of Como arrived and put the village to fire and sword. Cirimido was never rebuilt where it had stood, on the hill, but lower down, on the plain: and the swords and the flame stayed on the arms.
