Lomazzo

Province: Como · Region: Lombardy · Population: 9,194 · Postal code: 22074

For centuries Lomazzo was two towns in one. The parish of San Siro belonged to the diocese of Como, that of San Vito to Milan, and when the two cities divided the county of Seprio the split became civil as well: two separate communes, Lomazzo Comasco and Lomazzo Milanese, over a single built-up area with interlocking streets. Napoleon united them, but San Vito stayed in the Milanese diocese until 1981.

That double allegiance made the town neutral ground, and in 1249 and again in 1286 the delegations of Milan and Como, then at war, came here to conclude peace. The arms say the same: the Visconti serpent and the cross of Como, parted by a silver band lettered LOCUS MAXIMUS. They were never granted: in the nineteen-thirties the heraldic council rejected the request because that form of the name had little historical support, and offered instead the arms of the Carcano, lords of the place, a silver swan below an axe. The council went on using its own.
