Ponna

Province: Como · Region: Lombardy · Population: 267 · Postal code: 22020

In 1753 the parish priests of upper and lower Ponna began teaching children to read and write for nothing; in 1815 don Giovanni Battista Barelli went a step further and opened a boarding school for poor boys, where besides letters they taught drawing and the building techniques of the Intelvi master craftsmen.

People called it «the university of Ponna», and from there came the saying «to have studied at the university of Ponna», used today to mock somebody: the name of a school for the poor has become an insult. The municipality is made of three villages at three different heights, and in one of them there is a museum of dolls, more than three hundred, from all over the world.
