Cermenate sits at the southern edge of the province of Como, in the Brianza Comasca, where the high plain bends towards the first moraine hills and the Seveso marks the boundary. Standing on the Milan to Como axis came at a price: in the long war between the two cities the village was destroyed more than once, and in 1162 it sided with Frederick Barbarossa against Milan. After the peace of Como it passed under Como's rule.
From that road one episode survives, dated 1222: merchants from Lille, robbed at Montesordo, where a hospice for pilgrims stood, claimed damages. The older arms, recorded in the Stemmario Carpani as de burgo de Cermenate, bore four castles, probably the four hamlets the place was made of: Montesordo, Freghiera, Asnago and Castello. Asnago remained a commune of its own until 1928.
