Bagnolo Cremasco

Province: Cremona · Region: Lombardy · Population: 4,788 · Postal code: 26010

It is said that the brigand whom Alessandro Manzoni made immortal under the name of the Unnamed had a house at Bagnolo. There is a logic to it: the village belonged to the Venetian enclave of Crema, and anyone who needed to escape the Spanish authorities of Milan had only to cross the border. He probably recruited his bravoes here as well; what is certain is that in 1647 he left property to the oratory of Santa Maria delle Grazie, in the hamlet of Gaeta.

Bagnolo came into being before the year one thousand on the shores of the lake Gerundo, a stretch of water in the Lombard plain that no longer exists. Its lands belonged first to the Cistercian monks of the abbey of Cerreto, and later passed to the leading families of the Crema country. Between the end of the nineteenth century and 1931 the village also had a stop on the tramway that linked Lodi to Crema and Soncino.
