Monte Cremasco

Province: Cremona · Region: Lombardy · Population: 2,356 · Postal code: 26010

Monte Cremasco is the smallest municipality in the province of Cremona: a little more than two square kilometres, and among the most densely populated. In a village of the plain the name promises a mount, and the coat of arms keeps that promise in the most modest way possible: a silver shield with a hill, a single ear of wheat growing on it and a blue six-rayed star above. It is a coat of arms the municipality uses without any formal decree of concession: it exists in fact, not in law.

The church of Santi Nazario e Celso is first mentioned in 1582, and even then it was the parish church, so it is older than that; the look it has today comes from a partial rebuilding of 1834. Outside the village stands the sanctuary of the Madonna delle Assi, probably very ancient, enlarged in the sixteenth century. The rest of the recent history is made of roads: the Paullese has crossed the territory since the middle of the twentieth century and was doubled and turned into a dual carriageway between 2010 and 2012, while the old route was downgraded to a municipal road. The provincial road to Crespiatica has stopped being one as well.
