The official name of this village of the Cremona plain has a regular translation into dialect, Casalèt de Sura, but the village also has a second one that has nothing to do with the first: La Melòta. The sources record it beside the other without explaining it, the way one does with things that everybody in a place knows and nobody tells any more. And the dialect, moreover, is not that of Cremona: it is cremasco, the speech of the Crema area. That alone is enough to show which way Casaletto di Sopra looks, for all that it lies in the province of Cremona.
For a comune of 548 inhabitants it has a good many neighbours: it borders eight of them, from Soncino and Fontanella to Offanengo, Ricengo, Romanengo, Camisano, Ticengo and Barbata. The roads say the same. The three provincial roads that concern it all carry two names — Castelleone-Casaletto di Sopra, Soncino-Casaletto di Sopra, Casaletto di Sopra-Bottaiano — and the village is always at one end. The first, though, remains provincial only between the built-up area and the provincial boundary: the stretch towards Romanengo has been downgraded. The coat of arms and the gonfalon were granted by decree of the President of the Republic on 18 October 2002, and the cloth is party of purple and blue — purple, on a gonfalon, is rarely seen.
