Feast of Saint Ambrose
📅 Every year, on 7 December
On 7 December Torlino Vimercati celebrates its patron Saint Ambrose; the town preserves Villa Marazzi, among its historic residences.
The village appears for the first time in 1192, in an imperial diploma, and for eight centuries it was simply Torlino. The second half of the name arrived in 1961, when the comune added it in honour of count Ottaviano Vimercati, ambassador of king Victor Emmanuel II. Meanwhile, by a decree of December 1819, the comune of Azzano had been joined to it, and Azzano is today its hamlet: and from that hamlet comes one of the most curious memberships an Italian comune can boast. Since the nineties Torlino has belonged, through Azzano, to the association of the Azzano d'Italia: eleven comuni and hamlets that carry the same word in their name and whose inhabitants all call themselves azzanesi.
The parish church is dedicated to Saint Ambrose, and it is the only church in the diocese of Crema named after the patron of Milan: it has sixteenth-century origins, later reworked, and it keeps the painted and decorative cycles of Tommaso Pombioli and of Gian Giacomo Barbelli. Of the two villas, the Vimercati Groppallo Castelbarco is yellow with red framings, sober outside and neoclassical on the front that gives onto the garden, with Empire-style interiors; villa Marazzi, instead, has crossed the nineteenth and twentieth centuries changing style at every alteration, stands in a fine English park and has, indoors, symbols and images recalling Egypt. The tower one sees in the arms is that of villa Vimercati-Sanseverino; and near the provincial road there is a flying field, with a lit runway and a hangar.
