Saint George and the view over Brianza
📅 Every year, on 23 April
Molteno celebrates Saint George on 23 April, in the church dedicated to him, whose square offers a wide view over the hills of Brianza.
Lucio Battisti moved to Molteno in 1973 and stayed until his death in 1998. He was buried in the village cemetery, and there he remained for fifteen years: in 2013 his body was taken to San Benedetto del Tronto and cremated. For a quarter of a century Italy's most reclusive songwriter had his home in this Brianza municipality, then still in the province of Como, and for another fifteen years his grave was the only thing of him anyone could go and see. Now not even that is there.
Three thousand five hundred and eighty-seven inhabitants in the province of Lecco, to which Molteno passed in 1992 when eighty-three municipalities were detached from the Como province. The village is recognisable from far off by the hill called Ceppo, three hundred and four metres high, with the church of San Giorgio on top: up there in the Middle Ages stood a castle, of which only the name of a square survives. In 1912 excavations brought to light ten Roman inhumation tombs, dated to the fourth century by a coin of the emperor Constans.
