The parents of Achille Ratti, the future Pope Pius XI, were from Rogeno, although he was born at Desio. He was seen in the village: he attended, together with Emilio Visconti Venosta, the unveiling of the bust dedicated to Giuseppe Gadda, the politician who had spent his last years here and who died in the family villa in 1901. In the parish church of Santi Cassiano e Ippolito a vestment of Ratti's is still kept, along with the relics of Saint Hippolytus, brought here in 1786 from the suppressed Milanese church of Santa Elisabetta.

The name comes from water: from aruggia, the late Latin word for an irrigation channel. The municipality stretches from the southern shore of the lake of Pusiano, where Casletto stands, to the eastern bank of the Lambro, where the hamlet of Maglio lies with its watermills, among them the Leone mill of the seventeenth century. Here Giacomo Fornoni lived until 2016, Olympic gold medallist in cycling at the Rome Games of 1960. Three thousand one hundred and ninety-seven inhabitants in the province of Lecco.
