Feast of Saint Anthony the Abbot
📅 Every year, on 17 January
On 17 January Ello celebrates its patron Saint Anthony the Abbot, to whom one of the town's churches is dedicated.
Near a quarry just outside the village a hoard of weapons from the second millennium before Christ came to light: a helmet, two swords, two daggers, four spearheads, two axes. Three thousand years later Ello was the home of the Missaglia, the armourers who in the fifteenth and sixteenth centuries supplied armour to half of Europe.
The first written mention is in a diploma of Frederick Barbarossa of 1162, where Ellum appears among the lands of the monastery of Civate that the emperor took under his protection. The parish church, rebuilt in 1671 on a fifteenth-century church and on an older one still, keeps its Romanesque bell tower and frescoes with the four Doctors of the Church seated on thrones of cloud.
