Oggiono

Province: Lecco · Region: Lombardy · Population: 8,750 · Postal code: 23848

Oggiono lies between Lake Annone and the morainic hills of the Brianza above Lecco. Its chief building is the baptistery of San Giovanni Battista, octagonal, raised in the eleventh century over an older baptistery of the fifth or sixth century, square, with a round basin made for baptism by immersion. Inside, frescoes run from Romanesque to Renaissance, and two doorways open on stairs cut into the wall, supposed to have led to an upper gallery or to matronea.

The town gave its name to Marco d'Oggiono, a painter trained by Leonardo, whose polyptych of the Assumption is kept in the collegiate church of Sant'Eufemia; the palette and the two crossed brushes on the arms recall him, while the wavy bands stand for the waters of the lake and the date MDCLIV for the year the community bought back its civic liberties from feudal dependence. With the title of city the arms took in the imperial eagle, the clasped right hands from a shield of the Da Ogiono family in the Stemmario Trivulziano, and the motto concordia civitas facta est, from Sallust.
