Annone di Brianza

Province: Lecco · Region: Lombardy · Population: 2,292 · Postal code: 23841

The coat of arms of Annone is half heraldry and half landscape: above is the blazon of the Annoni, the local noble family who were its lords for centuries; below is the lake of Annone with the Lecco mountains behind it, the Cornizzolo, the Rai, the Corni di Canzo and the Moregallo, drawn one by one. The village is old: a document of 880 already describes it as a fortified settlement, and on the map of the Duchy of Milan in the Gallery of Maps in the Vatican the name appears in the form Alnoro. "Di Brianza" was added only in 1863.

The finest thing is the oratory of San Giorgio, of 1481, which incorporates part of an early medieval church and served as the parish church until 1839, when the new church of the Beata Vergine del Rosario was built to a design by Giuseppe Bovara. Inside, a single nave divided by three pointed arches dated 1481, and in the presbytery a series of early sixteenth-century frescoes: the apostles on the soffit of the triumphal arch, God among the evangelists on the vault, and a Crucifixion with Mary, John and the Magdalene between Saints George and Ambrose. They are attributed to the Master of the Pala Sforzesca. In the parish house are kept a sixteenth-century Flemish polyptych on the Passion and a canvas of the same period showing the meeting between Jesus and his mother.
