San Fiorano

Province: Lodi · Region: Lombardy · Population: 1,804 · Postal code: 26848

The castle of San Fiorano was destroyed three times in little more than sixty years: in 1216 by the Milanese allied with Piacenza, in 1239 by the Piacentini at war with Lodi, and in 1278 by the Milanese again, before the men of Lodi and Cremona seized it and razed it. Each time it was rebuilt, and in the end it sheltered the Tresseni, fugitives from Lodi for political reasons.

Beside the castle, where the cemetery now stands, was the church of Santa Elisabetta. Lorenzo Monti, an eighteenth-century historian from Codogno, records that in the outer walls of the apse, on the side facing the lago Barilli, big iron rings were fixed: they served to moor the fishermen's boats. The lake is no longer there. In 1543 count Gian Fermo Trivulzio obtained from Charles V permission to hold a market on one of his estates and placed it here: it was renowned all along the middle Po, and deals went on being struck there until the First World War. In 1866, meanwhile, the patriot Giorgio Guido Pallavicino received Giuseppe Garibaldi in the village.
