Marzano

Province: Pavia · Region: Lombardy · Population: 1,559 · Postal code: 27010

Under the fields of Marzano there was a large Roman villa, residential and productive at once, complete with private baths: recent excavations have brought part of it to light. Today's village, though, is early medieval: it appears in documents of the eleventh and twelfth centuries as Marcianum, and belonged to the Pavia monastery of San Pietro in Ciel d'Oro. Then, from the 1431 investiture of Alberico II da Barbiano, it entered the county of Belgioioso, and with the Barbiano it stayed until the abolition of feudalism.

The town's coat of arms, on the other hand, was not invented: it reproduces an emblem found inside the Stemmario Cremosano, a heraldic collection of 1680. In 1872 Marzano took in two neighbouring comuni, Spirago and Castel Lambro. The second has a curious history: it is named as Castellum Lambi as early as 1164, in the diploma by which Frederick I granted Pavia jurisdiction over various lands, but it did not stay long with Pavia — it ended up in the pieve of San Giuliano, that is in the Duchy of Milan, and returned to the province of Pavia only in 1786. It stands opposite Marzano, on the other side of the Lambro.
