Feast of San Giorgio
📅 Every year, on the third Sunday of October
On the third Sunday of October Montanaso Lombardo, a municipality of 2,231 inhabitants in the province of Lodi, celebrates its patron San Giorgio (Saint George).
In a village of two thousand two hundred people stands what the source calls the tallest structure in Italy: the chimney of the thermoelectric power station, about two hundred and fifty-three metres high. Its turbines run on natural gas alone and produce over two thousand megawatts. Not far away, at Arcagna, are the Experimental Institute for Horticulture and an outpost of the University of Milan that experiments with fruit growing: in the same municipality people study vegetable gardens and burn cubic metres of methane. The coat of arms, granted in 1988, sides with the former: a poplar for the green and fertile countryside, and a millwheel for the work of a community "ready to defend its own environment".
The history is that of a village next to a city: in the tenth century Montanaso belonged to the bishop of Lodi, then passed to various lords, and in 1295 it was a strategic base of Matteo Visconti; in the Napoleonic period, between 1809 and 1816, it was even a hamlet of Lodi, and regained its independence only with the Kingdom of Lombardy-Venetia. "Lombardo" was added in 1864, and in 1870 the municipality of Arcagna arrived, today the hamlet where the sanctuary and the institutes are. The parish church of San Giorgio Martire was consecrated in 1925. In recent years the population has doubled, and beside the farmsteads have grown some twenty small firms working in electromechanics and plastics.
