Galgagnano

Province: Lodi · Region: Lombardy · Population: 1,208 · Postal code: 26832

Until 1142 Galgagnano belonged to the bishop of Lodi, who then handed it over to Uberto dei Casetti; its church remained the seat of a pieve until 1440, with other parishes depending on it. Municipal autonomy was broken only once: between 1809 and 1816, under Napoleon, the village was demoted to a hamlet of Quartiano, and it got its status back with the kingdom of Lombardy-Venetia.

The village has stayed off the main roads and has kept its farming face. A building that today houses a medical centre, called Le due colombe, the two doves, was the post where horses were changed on the via Monzasca; and about ten farms in the area belong to the Ospedale Maggiore of Lodi, which entrusts the running of them to local people.
